Do I need a mobile app or is a mobile friendly web site good enough?

Many web publishers have elected to build mobile sites as their first foray into mobile, and the question becomes:  do I need to invest further in mobile and build a mobile app?

This week: HTML5 is the future of mobile apps

HTML5 has rapidly gained traction in the mobile application ecosystem. AT&T is turning their wireless network into a platform

(I am not at CES yet - plane leaves in a couple of hours).

AT&T is holding their press conference this morning.

In the quick review of what I can see online, they seem to be turning their network into a development platform with numerous APIs available now.  APIs, it seems, such as in-app purchase management, their own ad network for mobile apps, and much more. And they see HTML5 as the future for cross platform development.

This is important because it means AT&T “gets it” with regards to the power of software customization and enabling third parties to add value to their network services.  Third party apps create an enhanced ecosystem that adds value to their network and should eventually attract more customers.

It would be nice to see other vendors - say camera makers - release software development kits and APIs so that third parties can similarly add value and unleash new capabilities in their products.
